The Championship's fifth placed side Halifax made the 300 mile round trip to the north west to take on Championship One's fifth placed site Whitehaven in the fifth round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup. Both sides were in good form with five wins in their last six outings.

A sunny Recreation Ground was the venue for what looked, on paper, like a foregone conclusion but with Super League's Huddersfield Giants having lost out earlier in the day to lowly Swinton, and Hull KR taking down Leigh Centurions yesterday, there is no such thing in the cup.

When the draw was made for the fifth round of the 2017 Ladbrokes Challenge Cup there was one outstanding fixture. The all conquering Toronto Wolfpack from Championship One were draw away at high-flying Super League Salford Red Devils.

It would be a chance for the games newest side to test their mettle against one of its most established and all eyes were on the AJ Bell Stadium to see what would happen.

The Red Devils were without Junior Sa'u, Logan Tomkins and Todd Carney while Toronto gave a debut to surprise mid-week acquisition Ryan Brierley.

Super League's form team, Warrington Wolves played host to a Wakefield Trinity side who recorded two losses over the Easter period to end a three game unbeaten run. Wakefield could leapfrog the Catalans Dragons to take sixth spot in the league while a home victory would lift them level on points with St. Helens in eighth.

Tony Smith welcomed back Atkins, Brown and Russell but would have to make do without Westerman and Toby King who were both injured. Trinity coach Chris Chester was without the services of Allgood and Ashurst but did have Williams and Batchelor available for selection.

Eighth placed St Helens travelled to bottom club Widnes Vikings with their eyes on sixth spot as they look to continue their improved run of form since sacking coach Cunningham. A win for the Vikings would still see them finish the weekend in bottom spot, but would give them a much needed confidence boost.

Widnes have still got all sorts of injury problems and were now without the services of Armstrong, White and Craven but they did welcome back a handful of others including Hanbury, and half-back pairing Mellor and Gilmore. Saints were not without their own problems and would take the field without Lomax, Roby and Morgan but could call on the services of Kyle Amor who escaped a suspension after his sending off against Wigan on Good Friday.

The Kingstone Press Championship backed up Good Friday's league programme with a full round of Easter Monday fixtures with four afternoon and two evening kick offs.

All eyes were on Toulouse as the second placed side entertained the Hull KR side looking to maintain their unbeaten run at the top while Featherstone Rovers looked to keep the pressure on the top two as they welcomed Bradford. Fifth placed London Broncos were at the Batley Bulldogs while Swinton looked for the second win of the season as they hosted Rochdale.

In the evening games, fourth placed Halifax were playing Oldham and Sheffield were at home to the Dewsbury Rams.

With Castleford Tigers having just gone down at St Helens, the Red Devil's had a chance to join the Tigers and the Rhinos at the top of the table on sixteen points. A win for the Dragons would take them above Wakefield Trinity into sixth spot in the table as they continue to seek some consistency in their form.

It was a glorious evening in the south of France and the Red Devil's were taking things seriously, arriving yesterday to give themselves plenty of preparation time as they looked for their eighth win of the season in their quest for a top four spot.

Last time Wigan visited the home of Wakefield Trinity they left having suffered a 62-0 hiding. Today it was a Warriors side in fourth place against sixth placed Trinity but with just a single league point between the sides there was little to choose between them on paper.

The visitors were the favourites with the bookies as a result of the way that the sides performed on Good Friday. The Warriors were fresh off the back of a win over Saints while Trinity put up some resistance but lost out at the Castleford Tigers.

Good Friday's Round Ten of the Kingstone Press Championship was spread across Four kick-off times. Toulouse travelled to London for a lunchtime encounter with the Broncos while the heavy woollen derby between Dewsbury and Batley kicked off ahead of the bulk of the other fixtures.

Leaders Hull KR entertained Featherstone Rovers, Swinton Lions were at Oldham and the Sheffield Eagles travelled to Rochdale to take on the Hornets.

There was one evening kick off as Bradford Bulls took on Halifax.

The Easter weekends lambs to the Toronto Wolfpack slaughter were the North Wales Crusaders as the league's newest side visited Wrexham.

The Wolfpack gave debuts to new signings Ryan Bailey and Sean Penkywicz, both seasoned professionals adding yet another dimension to a strong Toronto squad.

With Toronto developing a Super League side but playing on Championship One they interest was not whether they would win, but against another side or part-timers it was by how many.

Would Wakefield Trinity halt the all-conquering Castleford Tigers as they travelled to the Mend-a-Hose Jungle for a top six clash with the league leaders. With Salford and Leeds playing later the day, the home side were looking to go four points clear at the top, but the visitors had a chance of finishing round nine in second place if they could get the win.

The big question on everyones lips was whether a resurgent Trinity would have the defence and fire power to halt the Tigers charge for the minor premiership and ultimately Old Trafford. Just to add to the interest the two teams were also playing for the Adam Watene Trophy.

The biggest derby in the game, Wigan Warriors against St Helens, had the added spice of a mid-week managerial sacking as Saints parted company with Kieron Cunningham after twenty-three years of service. Eighth placed Saints would go level on points with the Warriors if they could get a win at the DW Stadium but the home side themselves had their eyes on fourth spot.

The Warriors welcomed back captain Sean O'Loughlin and Michael McIlorum returned just over twelve months after breaking his ankle. The new coaching staff at Saints gave a debut to exciting winger Regan Grace, and Matty Smith made his first return to his old stomping ground.

It could only be described as a basement clash as Super League's two lowliest clubs went head to head at the Halton Stadium. Warrington Wolves were looking to build on last weekends win over the Leeds Rhinos as they visited a Widnes Vikings side coming into the game of the back of a hiding at Wakefield.

It had the promise of a low scoring affair as the league's two worst attacks were looking to improve on their average of just fifteen points a game. The prize at the end of the night would be eleventh spot, not what either of these sides would have expected to be scrapping over at the start of the season.

The John Smith's Stadium was the venue for a Wednesday night round nine fixture between tenth placed Huddersfield Giants, and eighth placed Catalans Dragons. Both sides have had disappointing starts to the season and were on an increasingly desperate points trail, and looking to start the Easter period with a win.

Huddersfield gave a debut to full back Jake Mamo, while the Dragons named Tony Gigot in the same position for the second game of the season after his two year suspension was reduced to three months.

Round nine of the Kingstone Press Championship kicked off on Saturday evening as Oldham made the long trip to Toulouse.

The remaining five games were all Sunday afternoon kick-offs with Hull KR looking to continue their unbeaten record at Swinton, Bradford Bulls were at home to the Sheffield Eagles, Featherstone Rovers hosted Batley Bulldogs, Halifax took on Dewsbury Rams and Batley Bulldogs were hosts to Rochdale Hornets.

It was second against third as two of the sides with a one hundred percent Kingstone Press Championship One record met at a sunny Keepmoat Stadium. With Barrow winning last night a win was required by both sides to draw back level top.

Doncaster have made great start to the 2017 season and with a team containing a number of players with Super League experience they have their eyes on a Championship spot next season. The Wolfpack welcomed back Moimoi after a three game suspension, but were without new signing Ryan Bailey who was signed too late to make his debut.
